| This film is very moving and captivating. It engages the viewer on a very personal level. The story is set in England, but really it can happen anywhere. In most developed countries, there are those who were there first and whose who came for a better living and a better future. And it is tough for both parties. Nationalism is nothing new, but in this day and age of mass migration it seems to be particularly attractive for people who are less fortunate. The soil is well fertilized for conflict between people and cultures. When someone wants to find a scapegoat, one usually succeeds.
“This is England”, however, goes go far deeper than the surface of nationalistic rhetorics and cliches like “skinheads are baaad, skinheads are crazy”. The story is about people and bad asses turn out to be as human as they come. That is heartbreaking. Beautifully done with love and compassion. It would be a pity if you miss this film! |
