So I do my homework. I bought the journal and I write in it every day, one page daily. It has been seven days now. Has my physical and mental health improved? Maybe, it’s hard to say. I have another “diary,” the idea is to write three pages every day at the beginning of the day. I force myself to do it consistently. I guess I figured out my major problem – it just stares right in my face. But leaving these cryptic generalizations alone, I will just post the quotes, that inspired my writing in the “In my humble opinion” journal the past week.

Hell is other people. (Jean-Paul Sartre)

I sometimes think that God in creating man somewhat overestimated his ability. (Oscar Wilde)

Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so. (Douglas Adams).

This world is made up for most part of morons and natural tyrants, sure of themselves, strong in their own opinions, never doubting anything. (Clarence Darrow)

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former. (Albert Einstein)

Many people would sooner die than think. In fact, they do. (Bertrand Russell)

Such is the human race. Often it does seem such a pity that Noah … didn’t miss the boat. (Mark Twain)

Victor Pelevin “The Sacred Book of Werewolf”

Have you seen the hit of the last Venice Biennale – the haystack in which the first Belarusian postmodernist, Mikolai Klimaksovich, hid from his local police inspector for four years? Alexander called this work plagiaristic and told Brian about the similar haystack famously used before the revolution by Vladimir Lenin. Brian observed that repetition is not necessarily plagiarism, it is the very essence of the postmodern, or – to put it in broader terms – the foundation of the modern cultural gestalt, which is manifested in everything, from the cloning of sheep to remakes of old movies, for what else can you do after the end of history? Brian said it was precisely Klimaksovich’s use of quotation that made him a postmodernist, not a plagiarizer. But Alexander objected that no quotations would ever have saved this Klimaksovich from the Russian police, and history might have come to an end in Belarus, but there was not sign of it breaking down yet in Russia.

Then Brian showed Alexander a work by Asuro Keshami, one which he regards with especial affection, not least owing to the serious investment required for its production and installation. Keshami’s work, inspired by the oeuvre of Camille Paglia, of whom you must have heard, consists of an immense tube of red plastic with projections on the inside in the form of white fangs. It is proposed to install in the open air in one of London’s sports stadiums.

And now I am getting to the point. One of the most serious problems in the world of modern art is the invention of original and fresh verbal interpretations of a work. Literally just a few phrases are required, which can be reprinted in the catalogues and reviews. This apparently trivial detail can often decide the fate of a piece of art. It is very important here to be able to perceive things from an unexpected, shocking angle, and your friend, with his barbarically fresh view of the world, does this remarkably well. Therefore, Brian would like permission to use the ideas expressed by Alexander yesterday for the conceptual support of the installation. The accompanying text which I include below is by way of being a fusion of Brian’s and Alexander’s ideas:

Asuro Keshami’s work ‘VD-42 CC’ combines the languages of different areas – engineering, technology and science. At the base level the subject-matter is the overcoming of space: physical space, the space of taboo and the space of our subconscious fears. The languages of engineering and technology deal with the material from which the object is constructed, but the artist addresses the viewer in the language of emotions. When the viewer learns that certain people have given this little queer fifteen million pounds to stretch out a huge imitation-leather cunt above an abandoned soccer pitch, he remembers what he does in his own life and how much he is paid for it, then he looks at the photo of this little queer in his horn-rimmed spectacles and funny jacket, and experiences confusion and bewilderment bordering on the feeling that the German philosopher Martin Heidegger called ‘abandonment’ (Geworfenheit). The viewer is invited to concentrate on these feelings, which constitute the precise aesthetic effect that the installation attempts to achieve.

Love may be blind but marriage is a real eye-opener.

It is a Saturday, a sunny and cold day in Toronto. In 1993, February 6th was a Saturday, it was sunny in the morning and cold, the roads were slippery (talk about signs!!!), but then it warmed up enough for a real snow storm in the night.

So, today is my wedding anniversary with my first husband to whom I am no longer married. I am not divorced from him either. The divorce is still in the process…

I often wonder when the break up really happened and who broke what… and honestly I don’t know. The saddest part is that I still care. The best part is… well, the best part remains to be discovered.

Another chapter in my journey. As much as I am unable to do anything these days or write anything, I could not miss this day. I should make a post. And, surprisingly enough it turns out to be the post # 342 (here it comes again, my number 42). Madness? Eccentricity?

“Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Remarriage is the triumph of hope over experience…”

“The secret of a happy marriage remains a secret.” – Henny Youngman.

“I never knew what real happiness was until I got married; and then it was too late.”

“I think weddings are sadder than funerals, because they remind you of your own wedding. You can’t be reminded of your own funeral because it hasn’t happened. But weddings always make me cry.” – Brendan Behan (1923-64) Irish playwright.

“Three rings of marriage: The engagement ring, the wedding ring, and the suffering.”

“I was married by a judge. I should have asked for a jury.” – George Burns.

“Marriage is for women the commonest mode of livelihood, and the total amount of undesired sex endured by women is probably greater in marriage than in prostitution.” – Bertrand Russell (1872-1970), British philosopher, Marriage and Morals.

“Many a man owes his success to his first wife and his second wife to his success.” – Jim Backus.

“By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you’ll be happy. If you get a bad one, you’ll become a philosopher.” – Socrates.

“The trouble with some women is that they get all excited about nothing — and then marry him.” –Cher

Coming back to my own insanity. I just realized that today is the day 42.

4th February, 2010 – 42 for those who remember that 42 is my number. We’ll see if the number has any significance. It is always “either…or” Either it has significance or not. I am not obsessed with it, but now it tends to jump out. I guess my eye is trained now to pick 42 out of the crowd.

It is all about finding something that I have lost. I told you I am on drugs. My brain does not cooperate so easily as it used to. And yet I made a commitment to this life. Well, to be exact, to my life, the universe and everything. Yes, the answer is 42 and I chose it by simply putting my blind trust into it. Maybe it is a joke, who knows? Maybe it is not important. But what is?

I was always drawn to challenges. I don’t know why. Overcoming difficulties. God knows, where my willpower is now, but I have to find it. My Technical Support Person, my Advisor, my Reader and the control audience (which is same person in all the roles) tells me that I should write. Period. Don’t give up. Write. Write. Write. Every day. Be consistent. God knows, that I am trying. Even though at the moment, it is more like collecting resources and fertilizing the soil. A lot of it, are not my stories, but materials that I collected over time. Nobody can live my life for me. It does not matter how many times human lives are repeated – every person lives it only once.

Maybe that is why I decided to write the way I write – to share my experience, not to teach how to do anything. I often get inspired by others, and put their writings on my web site. I love quotes, because a lot of things have been thought over by so many people. Originality is hard to achieve. So is understanding. But I prefer understanding. That was always my goal. Maybe because understanding is so elusive. Even love and affection are easier to get than true understanding. My universe is very lonely. But I am trying. Perseverance. Is that the key?

Still wondering about my sanity? Stop. I am out of my mind. The first time I walked into Scarborough Grace Hospital was on May 16, 2007. I felt awful – I knew I needed help. What did get? Right – the treatment!!! Professionals treated me as a nutcase, they locked me in, tied to the bed and well, the story is fairly long– I will tell you later. Oh, yes, I will.

Coming back to my number. 42.

Speaking about coincidences – Form 42 – Mental Health Act.

Dated May 16, 2007, it has two checkmarks

The Physician certified that she has reasonable cause to believe that you have:

Shown or are showing a lack of competence to care for yourself;

Serious physical impairment of you.

That is for coming to Hospital seeking help.

Forget 2007. Now comes 2008 – I was hospitalized two or three times. The first time at the Scarborough Grace hospital again. I was locked up again. That is where I met him. I just opened my eyes from the deep sleep induced by the bloody medications and He comes in singing “That is Amore”. It was very extraordinary. A few days later when we were allowed on the regular premises of the Psychiatric Ward, we were sitting outside on the patio and I was half-asleep as usual and then I opened my eyes and the first thing I saw – He jumped two meters away from me.

I asked him “What happened?”

He said: “I just got an erection”

I said: “What did I do?”

He said: “Nothing. I just looked into your eyes!”

That was the moment I will never forget.

Later I bought him a souvenir == a sailboat “Blue and Crystal”, but he was mad at me and he refused even to look at it. I still have it, it is a souvenir and an inspiration.

There is the song – That’s Amore by Dean Martin –

I don’t think they could use zoinks.ca, because doesn’t Shaggy already have a copyright on that?

Zip should offer the following:
1) Computer games (PC)
2) Console Games (Xbox, etc)
3) Adult movies
4) Music CD’s
Then there would be no reason to leave the bedroom.

They actually rent out some music CDs when they are part of a DVD set, like Aimee Mann’s DVD and many others.

Plus, since Zip already has plenty of soft-core “adult” DVDs, I think that they should also let us rent sex toys. It would give new meaning to the term ZipRefill. Cleaning the “toys” with liquid soap before using them would of course be highly recommended!
I have already went looking for porn on zip…didn’t find any. Although it is not why I signed up for zip, it is a genre of film and I watch almost all genres (except horror….too scary) and would watch adult films if they were a choice. However, I am not sure that I would pay extra for that privilege. However, the tricky part might be making the titles searchable yet keeping the darn kids out of the search. It is easy in a video store to keep the kids out the the room in the back (except my little kids who love to run in and out of there shouting BO-BOS! to ellicit a response from the panicked staff of the establishment). And, Kallini…I am a girl too!

Oh, my goodness! That is great! However, I am living in a horror right now. My husband finally agrees to divorce me. Took everything!!!!!!!!!!! Car keys, cell phone, left me $200 out ouf all FORMER joint accounts. And he has a job, and I don’t. He thinks that he will get the custody of my son as well. Well, be my guest, call me a moron. I guess, I deserve what I get. Any suggestions? Please do not make me cry. I need a little bit of support. Pleeeeeeeeeeasee! And you know what? I want to make a movie out of my love(life) story.

Kallini, will the movie be x-rated (keeping on topic, you see)?

Anyway, maybe zippy’s next poll in the lobby should be about porn rentals:

2. Sure, I’d rent a few

Obviously, sex is e(x) – rated. I see. Also, my ex has to be in it. So it will be doubly X-RATED. But I am not playing myself.

So ready or not, here I come (no pun intended. You see?)
It (the movie) starts like this. My ex calls the cops so they can put me in a hospital. Every time he does not understand my behaviour, he thinks that I (!!!) need treatment. So the cops come to see me in my bedroom. All four of them. Four?! Half an hour into a conversation, I figure out, that two of them are actually paramedics. It was interesting. Kinda. Took them all two hours to realize that they cannot prove that I am insane. Felt powerful, power is intoxicating.

Well, anyway, Sandman. 1912. Huh. I did not see it from that angle. My angle is 1970. The last brainstorming wave. Did anybody read the book “Do What you Are”? It kinda inspired me in this way.

- Do what you are
- Do what you want
- Do who you want

Why porn, anyway? The real thing is not good enough or everybody likes security?
Security is OK, police is better. Some of them are good, or so it seems.

Hi!

I’m just curious to know if peoples here would be interrested by renting adult (by adult i mean porn) movies? If they asked question about games renting i’m sure porn would have some renting possibility too.

I think it would have been a good idea when ZIP first got started but accessing porn online is so easy now it hardly seems worth it in the long run. If I were Zip, I would just start a seperate online rental service dealing strictly in adult rentals and call it something else: Zoinks.ca

Could be a great potential here for zip and obviously it would have to be under a different name but I think there are enough big sites out there offering VOD and the possibility to stream or buy DVDs that you have to wonder if Zip could become a choice player in the porn distribution industry. Not to mention all the different sources all over offering free porn.

No, I don’t think I would create a second account from a separate site just for that either or pay extra for it. But, if adult films were added to the list of titles available on Zip, I probably would rent a few here and there.

I would be interested as well but I can’t see it happening. There are so many reactionaries in and out of the government that I suspect Zip wouldn’t want to make themselves vulnerable legally. I mean, movies are being confiscated at the border based on their titles:
http://jam.canoe.ca/Movies/2008/05/08/5518466.html

I know that Border Services are especially stupid when it comes to sex but I imagine Canada Post is just as bad. All they’d need is one complaint and Zip would be red-flagged and scrutinized to death. Can you imagine if my copy of Shaving Ryan’s Privates was accidently shipped to Kish, for example?

However, the perfect name for the service would be the obvious but still cool UnZip.ca.

I don’t think zip would be in any trouble legally. They would need a different type of business licence to rent adult movies though. Plus I am sure common sense would dictate that they would up their security to make it extremely difficult for kids to rent movies.

Unzip would be wonderful. Most of the guys who say they wouldn’t rent it would be among the first customers.
Two problems with the idea, despite the easy money in it for Unzip:
1) Lawsuits when kids rent a few
2) Boycotts by church groups that want to control what you watch on TV.

Still it would allow zip to dip into a commodities market that has made millionairs out of more than a few men (and women)

I don’t think either of these would be a problem.

1) Lawsuits: Step 1: Age verification by credit card — good news, zip already has those. Step 2: 2nd password on the account to access adult titles, once per session. That way your kids can still rent regular movies. Or just keep your unsupervised kids off the computer… it’s called “parenting”.

2) The profits made on adult films would eclipse any minor loss from elitist religious fanatics trying to impose their beliefs on others. (Can you guess my views? )

It’s not about those problems, it’s all about politics.

Just kidding of course, but it does beg the question, how long does a title have to be “on order” before I should just give up on it? I have a couple of zipped titles that have been showing that little truck icon for literally months. (Not to mention the ones with the perpetual “Soon” icon.) If they can’t get the DVD, shouldn’t they just say “no longer available” and be done with it? Are they keeping the titles open in case of some possible future re-issue? It’s just crazy.

Okay, let’s assume that Zip decides to change its policy and stocks adult movies. Are there actually any worth bothering to list?

Zip does have some ‘mature audience’ titles. Ages of Lulu, Shortbus, 9 Songs, Thriller, The Image, others. Do any adult titles actually measure up as films to Zip’s usual listings? I don’t watch the stuff so I really have no background to share here, but I did watch an episode of Porno Valley on Showcase one time and it looks like they’re shooting basically nude infomercials. Generic artless garbage. If that’s all there is, what would be the point in stocking it? Filmgal (I think) has been trying to get the Zip staff to stock The Killing Fields. Seems like a more worthwhile priority. [This from the person who incurred the wrath of McGuffin by reviewing Confessions of Lap Dancer.]

Speaking of long waits, I’ve been waiting to see Peking Opera Blues since 2004. I de-listed it for a while, because i got sick of looking at the truck symbol.

If you are going to expect art as you put it when watching porn then you obviously missed the point. Most people don’t really care how cheesy the movies look so long as they ” get the job done” . There are many reasons to watch porn as there are people.
Well, I have nothing against porn movies, but there are already companies that are doing it, at least for the gay market.

kapon3:

a) we know this
b) YOU’RE missing the point

You acknowledge a multitude of motivations for watching porn yet dismiss cinematic quality rather than consider it one of them. Nobody here expects art in porn or is likely to confuse the two and nobody ‘put it’ that way either. Let’s start over.

Did anybody watch the documentary Inside Deep Throat? It chronicles not just the furor over that particular movie, but the political and legal backlash that has tracked the adult movie industry throughout its history. It’s actually quite fascinating. Back in the early 70’s the Nixon administration commissioned an independent study by leading social scientists into the effects of watching porn on social behavior. They found that there wasn’t any. This was politically inconvenient and potentially embarrassing for the administration, so the results of the study were not widely circulated. The adult movie industry, meanwhile, was busy going through an interesting transition, organizing up from the underground, illegal (ie. mafia) activity it had been for so long into at least marginal legitimacy and becoming increasingly cinematically ambitious. 70s style indie exploitation films with hardcore sex thrown in were commercially viable enough to make producers a lot of money and encourage them to tackle bigger projects. This was a potentially interesting cinematic development: violence and horror were getting increasingly explicit in genre movie making, why not sex? Then along came the Reagan administration which, not wanting to repeat the error of independent research, appointed the Meese Commission to ‘investigate’ porn in America with the specific purpose of coming to the pre-determined conclusion that it was evil. (There are several good books on this particular travesty, which I read back when I was an anti-censorship advocate. Man, was THAT tough racket. Taking on the religious right and the loony left at the same time. Yeesh.) Anyway, by setting restrictive legal guidelines as to what porn could contain and where and how it could be marketed, the Meese Commission did NOT succeed in stamping it out as it had hoped, but simply set a permanent cap on what an adult movie could be and how much it could cost if it wanted to make back its investment. The result was what Norman Mailer called in the documentary ‘a commodity and a mediocre one at that’.

The most interesting fact in the movie, however, is a notation that Hollywood makes on average about 300 moves annually while about 14,000 adult movies are made. A movie buff like me is going to watch about half to two-thirds of Hollywood’s output per year, about 3-4 movies a week. That would be an AWFUL lot of porn to watch and it would still be only 1% of what’s out there. THAT’S why I brought up the subject. If you don’t know the market (and I don’t) the numbers are stacked against you; and if there isn’t anything that would be of any interest or quality cinematically, why waste the time?

That was my exact thought a few years back after I first saw Boogie Nights. I loved that movie so much that I thought it might be fun to seek out one of the Johnny Wadd movies just to see what they were actually like (the Marky-Mark Walberg character is a thinly disguised version of John C. Holmes, as I understand it). Reviews in imdb.com, however, discouraged me and I never bothered.
